How Quest Cognitive Hypnotherapy helped me regrow my hair after total alopecia…

A few years ago, as the world was waking up to the realities of a pandemic, my personal world was rocked to the core. I was shocked to find myself dealing with alopecia universalis, ie, a total loss of all my hair. This began in January 2020, following some very difficult years of trying to ‘keep going’ through illness and family bereavements.

Just 4 weeks later I had lost all of the hair on my head and body. The medical profession had no real answers (other than to say this was probably an auto-immune issue) and no cure.

As a Cognitive Hypnotherapist for over 18 years, I realised this was a time like no other to walk my talk. I needed to apply to myself everything I had learned as a hypnotherapist and healer that had enabled me to help my clients overcome their own personal issues so successfully.

Having worked as a hypnotherapist, I had a clear understanding of how the mind and body are connected, and how chronic stress can adversely affect physical health in the body.

But perhaps more importantly under the circumstances, I also understood how positive emotions (such as calm, relaxation, peacefulness, safety, love, etc,) have a healthy effect on the body by helping to calm and regulate our nervous system.  When the chronic “fight or flight” stress response is reduced or switched off, the body can then switch from essentially having been in ‘survival mode’, to then re-focusing energy on healing and regaining a state of wellbeing.

So I began to focus on my own personal healing, as well as some much needed self-care. (As a therapist I was very good at focusing my energy on helping others, but in challenging times I was not always so good at applying my knowledge to myself!) I stopped working for a while and focused on helping to calm my exhausted nervous system and nurture my body. I was very aware that the previous few years had been unrelentingly stressful for me, so I took the opportunity to rest and put myself first.

I resisted the urge to instantly start working on trying to heal the alopecia, and instead saw it as a sign that I needed to take care of myself.

So I rested and re-focused on connecting with things I enjoyed, but that I had lost touch with, like listening to my favourite music on repeat, singing and dancing again, walking in nature and cooking new recipes for the fun of it. I made an effort to stay away from stressful situations and TV programmes, and generally did my best to keep myself in a relaxed frame of mind as much as possible.

When I felt rested and stronger in myself, I focused more directly on my healing by using the Cognitive Hypnotherapy techniques that were gentle yet powerful in a healing way. These enabled me to regain a sense of inner peace and successfully get to the root of my health issue.

Rather incredibly, my hair literally began to regrow within a few hours of doing a therapeutic technique on myself that freed me from the emotional trauma connected to it.  I was astonished.

I could feel, as soon as I’d done the technique, that something had shifted within me, and I felt different somehow.  A weight had been lifted in some way… That evening before going to bed, I noticed in the mirror what looked like a dark shadow on my scalp that I hadn’t noticed before.  The following morning that dark shadow had grown and had spread across one side of my scalp.  I wasn’t sure what to make of it, but that evening my partner was standing behind me and he was amazed to see tiny hairs breaking through the surface of my scalp!

I was cautious at first, but incredibly the hair continued growing back healthily from that day and has thankfully stayed strong and healthy ever since.

I have since gone on to use the same approach with a client of mine who also had alopecia, and they experienced complete hair regrowth very quickly which I was thrilled about.

This is my experience, and I understand how everyone is different. However, the approach I use with Cognitive Hypnotherapy achieves healing changes to both the conscious and subconscious levels of the mind (where it’s needed most), which then produces beneficial changes at both the emotional and physical levels of the body.

A gentle yet wonderfully effective therapeutic approach for healing.

Some tips you might find useful to aid your healing:

  • Reduce stress levels as much as you possibly can. Occasional stress is not usually a problem, but when the body is subjected to prolonged or chronic stress, it is in survival mode, not healing mode.
  • Take up a form of relaxation for mind and body. This can be as simple as going for walks in nature (if possible) or doing some gentle yoga, tai chi, qi gong exercise. Singing or dancing are also good at switching off the stress signals in the body, as well as focusing on doing something you enjoy.
  • Positively visualise yourself feeling and being well. Think about how you want to feel and be, and imagine it happening in gradual stages… (The brain responds to visualisation as if it’s happening for real, so set up a positive expectation for your body.)
  • In the same way, using Positive Affirmations can help the mind and body to create a positive expectation of health. For example, telling yourself every day (repeat at least 3 times) something along the lines of: “With every day that passes I am feeling better/healthier/happier/ easier in myself” can start to produce a real positive difference in how you feel. The more you say it, the more your mind will pick up on it and help you to experience it.

I truly feel there is so much potential for healing (and self-healing) if you’re able to explore it, because it’s in addressing the emotional root cause (instead of just the symptoms), that the healing really happens.

If you, or someone you care about, would like to know more about ways to regain wellness, you can get in touch with me. I’ll be very happy to have a chat, and if I can help in any way I’ll be delighted to.
